What is GPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance across all your courses. It's one of the most important metrics used by colleges, scholarship committees, and employers to evaluate your academic achievement.

GPA is calculated by converting your letter grades to numerical values, multiplying by course credits, and finding the average. In the United States, most schools use a 4.0 scale where:

A
4.0 points
B
3.0 points
C
2.0 points
D
1.0 points
E
0.0 points

Your GPA provides a quick snapshot of your overall academic performance and is used for honor roll recognition, college admissions, scholarship eligibility, and graduation requirements.

HCPSS Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Howard County Public School System calculates both weighted and unweighted GPAs to fairly represent student achievement across different course levels.

Unweighted GPA

Treats all courses equally on the standard 4.0 scale, regardless of difficulty level.

  • • A = 4.0 points (all courses)
  • • B = 3.0 points (all courses)
  • • C = 2.0 points (all courses)
  • • D = 1.0 points (all courses)
  • • E = 0.0 points (all courses)

Shows your actual performance without considering course difficulty.

Weighted GPA

Gives extra points for advanced courses to recognize increased difficulty and workload.

  • Regular courses: Standard 4.0 scale
  • Honors courses: +0.5 points
  • GT/AP courses: +1.0 points

Rewards students for taking challenging coursework and academic risks.

HCPSS Weighting Examples:

Regular Course

A in English 9 = 4.0 points

Honors Course

A in Honors Chemistry = 4.5 points

GT/AP Course

A in AP Calculus = 5.0 points
